Why Instructional Design?
Simply put, Instructional Design is a natural fit for my strengths and professional interests. Why do I feel this way?
Reflecting on my career in higher education, I find one common thread that ties together the many "hats" I wear as a faculty member: I enjoy building practical tools that help others succeed. Whether this means building tutorial videos to supplement in-person courses, developing training videos to help colleagues learn software systems or work more effectively and efficiently with their students, or taking on a major role in developing a photo guide for wildlife rehabbers and conservationists to use in their duties, my strength has always been in determining ways to identify, address, and close learning gaps.

My Process
Like most Instructional Designers, my process is rooted in the ADDIE model of instructional design, but I think frequent and efficient feedback from clients is key to success, so I prefer a more iterative approach with frequent opportunities for feedback and revisions.
To start, meeting with clients to determine who the target audience for a training is, where the gaps in knowledge are, what success would look like, and how best to communicate with each other is important to build a strong foundation for the project.
From there, I design a general overview, or design document, that details my training recommendations, learning objectives, training outline, and expected deliverables for your review.
When you are satisfied with the design plan, I will begin developing your training. Again, this process requires feedback to assure we stay on the same page as the project develops.
After multiple rounds of review, your course materials will be ready to deploy to your employees.
Personal Interests
When I’m not working, you can find me relaxing at home with my three cats, sketching in my nature journal or on my ipad, or out on the trails looking for birds and photographing nature of all kinds.
